xCBL - XML Common Business Library - was among the first business languages available on the market. It originates from a parent business language created in 1997 to assess XML's capabilities for the use with e-commerce applications. As a second step it also explored which requirements XML design, development, and transaction settings should comply with to broaden the use of electronic commerce.
Two years later Commerce One took over. A provider of procurement solutions, Commerce One looked for support for their vision of interoperable e-commerce applications and e-marketplaces. xCBL appeared to be the right means to achieve this objective. To ensure interoperability the transformation of EDI structures which were used in the Commerce One procurement solutions were a necessary prerequisite for the new version. xCBL thus incorporates a "Road to XML" for EDI users who want to benefit from the XML advantages. This aspect has also become a constant requirement for the following versions.
What does xCBL include? xCBL includes a set of XML business modules and a document framework for their use. It is not restricted to a particular business but aims at supporting all participants in e-Commerce. While it is open and rich enough to operate with a variety of e-commerce standards, it offers users the opportunity to further specify and tailor standard documents to their custom demands. xCBL is freely available for everyone on the xCBL web pages. Today other companies beside Commerce One contribute to the development work, like SAP, Microsoft, Compaq, and Sun Microsystems. "xCBL is the result of extensive collaboration between Commerce One® and the leading XML standard bodies, e-commerce enterprises, and hardware and software vendors, as well as analysis of existing e-commerce standards including Electronic Data Interchange (EDI), RosettaNet and Open Buying on the Internet (OBI)." The UBL Technical Committee has chosen xCBL as the starting point for their Universal Business Language (UBL) development.

The xCBL versions 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0 have been imported into GEFEG.FX and are ready for use. View them in the comfortable browser, or add documentation and notes in the XML schema editor. You can also specify additional restrictions which occur in the business context.
